The back cover offers a short introduction of the author:

Mufti Muhammad Khan is based in Lahore, Pakistan and is one of the leading teachers of Dars e Nizami (traditional Islamic scholastic course). He is also heavily involved in both writing and translating. He currently has over 100 titles published on a range of subjects such as Hadith, Fiqh, Usul ul Fiqh, women’s rights and social issues.

The purpose and contents of the book are also described on the back cover:

In the 10th year after migration the people heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) was intending to undertake his obligation of the pilgrimage to the House of Allah, each and every one wanted to join him in his blessed journey. Indeed, it is narrated that the previous Prophets also joined in this blessed journey with the Prophet (peace be upon him). The people not only wanted to witness the Prophetic way of performing the Hajj but also wished to attain the barakah and honour of the Hajj with him.

This book allows the reader to witness and be spiritually part of this journey with a step by step account of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) 26 day journey, from his preparations for leaving Madeenah to his invitation to the people on his return. No pilgrim should undertake this holy journey without having read this book. On numerous occasions during the journey the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered the companions to seek the rituals of Hajj from him as he was unlikely to perform Hajj again, and indeed this was his only Hajj, with him passing away 81 days after the Hajj.

The book has 11 chapters with the following titles: The Virtues of the Ka’ba, History of the Hajj, The Hajj Journey, Entering Makka and ‘Umra, Waiting in Makka and Leaving for Mina, The 9th of Dhul Hijj, At Mina, Departure from Makka, The Journey to Madeenah, Attendance at the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Court, with one appendix, titled ‘Quick Guide to Hajj’.

In the Chapter of The virtues of the Ka’ba, the author narrates a hadith, under the subheading, ‘Looking at the Ka’ba is Worship’:

Jafar bin Muhammad narraters from his grandfather that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Looking at the Sacred house is ibaadah (worship).’ (Mutheer ul Garaam)

The book also offers historical perspective on parts of the Ka’ba, for example under the subheading ‘The Meezab of Mercy’:

This is the name of the Ka’ba’s rainspout and we find mention of it in the Quraysh’s rebuilding of the Ka’ba. Through it, water from the Ka’ba’s blessed roof falls upon the Hateem. At first it was all wooden, then Waleed bin Abdul Malik put on a gold coat upon the wood. In 1276 Hijri (approx. 1858 AD) Sultan Abdul Majeed Khan had a golden spout made in Constantinople and that is what is still there today. (Daaira t’ul Mu’aarif).

Then the author narrates the following hadith:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The dua performed under the rainspout of mercy ends up being accepted. (Jaame ul Lateef)

The book also offers interpretation of the names of places and their descriptions, in the chapter, The Virtues of the Ka’ba the author writes:

The wall of the Ka’ba between it’s door and the Hajar ul Aswad is known as the Multazim. Abdullah bin Abbas narrates:

‘Between the Hajar and the door is the Multazim.’ (Akbaar e Makka)

The famous Tabiee Mujahi writes:

‘The space between the rukn and the door is called the Multazim’ (Al Quraa)

Why is it called the Multazim?

Iltizaam means to stick to something. Multazim thus means the place that is stuck to and supplicate. Allama Yaaqoot Hmawi writes:

‘It is called that because people supplicate and seek refuge by sticking to it.’ (Mujam al Baldaan)

In the chapter, History of the Hajj, it discusses the first Hajis, and specifically Prophet Adam’s (peace be upon him) Hajj:

Syeduna Adam (peace be upon him) was the first human to perform the Hajj. Imam Abu’l Shaykh and Imam Ibn Khuzayma narrate from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

‘O Adam (peace be upon him) performed the whole of his Hajj barefoot, in total he performed 300 Hajj and 700 ‘Umras. During his first Hajj, he met Jibril (peace be upon him) at Arafat who said to him, ‘O Adam, may your Hajj be accepted, I performed the tawaaf of the House 50,000 years before your birth.’ (Sahih Ibn Khuzayma)

After these introductory chapters about the virtue of the Ka’ba and the first ones to do Hajj, the book turns to focus on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his preparations for the Farewell Hajj. The book describes his conveyance, his family (wives and children) joining him, the time and day he (peace be upon him) commenced the journey, and the events that occurred on the journey. It also includes descriptions of where the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) rested, prayed supererogatory prayers, and made supplications.

There are also a few hadiths presented describing the accompanying of other Prophets; while in the valley of Rohaa, the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

‘I am witnessing Isa (peace be upon him) on the path of Rohaa proclaiming Talbiya.’ (Al Muwaahib Ludduniya)

It is also reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw Yunus (peace be upon him) as well:

Abdullah ibn Abbas narrates:

‘When the Prophet (peace be upon him) reached the valley of Harsha he asked ‘Which valley is this?’ He was informed ‘It is Harsha.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘I can see Yunus bin Mataa on a red she camel. He is wearing a woollen cloak, the bridle of his she-camel is of palm fibre and he is reciting the Talbiya. (Muslim)

Upon entering Makka, the book describes his first act:

The first act the Prophet (peace be upon him) undertook in Makka was the renewal of his wudhu (ablution)

Syeda Umm ul Momineen Aisha narrates:

‘The first thing he did on arriving in Makka was Wudhu.’ (Bukhaari 683)

The book goes on to describe the specific door which he used to enter the House of Allah, his duas upon seeing the Ka’ba and his method of ‘Umra, and Hajj, it even describes how the Prophet (peace be upon him) lost and recovered his luggage. The book also describes how his head hair was shaved on the 10th of Dhu’l Hijj, and how the Prophet (peace be upon him) distributed his hair amongst his companions. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also had his companions, both male and female, to ask him questions related to the rulings of Hajj and he (peace be upon him) would reply, such as:

Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas narrates:

‘The Prophet (peace be upon him) stopped at Mina to provide guidance to the people. A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) ‘I did not know and shaved my head before slaughtering.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Slaughter (again) and there is no harm.’ A second man came and asked, ‘Ya Rasoolullah, I did not know and I slaughtered before the stoning.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied ‘Stone and there is no harm.’ The companions state that on that day whatever was asked about any ritual performed early or late the Prophet replied, ‘There is no harm.’ (Muslim, Book of Hajj)

Overall the book gives the reader an excellent understanding of how the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Farewell Hajj. The level of detail recorded about this journey is quite amazing. Reading and understanding all the steps the Prophet (peace be upon him) took bring to life all the actions that are done on the Hajj trip. In other words, by understanding the background of each specific time, place and action, it adds a significant spiritual aspect to the Hajj, ‘Umra and our visits to Makka. Once the reader finishes this book, it would imbue the reader to perform the Hajj just as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did.

May Allah increase the rank of those who participated in publishing this book, and give us all the propensity to visit His house and perform the ‘Umra and Hajj, in the manner that emulates the Best of Creation, Our Master, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Ameen.
